Wellness on the go!

Once mid-February comes around, my family is ready for a little getaway to escape the blustery Northeast winter. We normally take advantage of the President’s Day holiday to take our mid-winter break. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the last couple years haven’t been too adventurous as far as vacation locations but we’ve managed to make the most of our road trips. During the pandemic, like many others, I had the time to focus on my wellness routine. When you’re stuck in the house and not busy with a bunch of outdoor plans, you can really get a wellness routine to stick. Now that “outside is opening back up” as they say, my family is starting to plan bigger vacations again. With the uptick in outdoor plans and vacations, I don’t want to lose all the progress I’ve made on my wellness journey. For this mid-winter getaway (and many more vacations to come), I wanted to share how I take my wellness routine “on-the-go”:

  1. Hydration is key – I’ve shared in a previous post the awesome benefits of keeping healthy hydration habits. The easiest way to keep hydration top of mind when traveling is carrying a water bottle with you. Most airports have bottle filling stations these days so making sure you keep that water intake up when on vacation is easier than ever. I try my best to have a full glass of water as soon as I wake up so before bed, I make sure I have water ready to go (no excuses). When I’m drinking my morning glass of water, I take my multi-vitamin and black elderberry as well. I’m getting better with not forgetting my vitamins when I travel.
  2. Mediation made easy – When traveling as a family, I try to take a few moments of “me” time when I can. First thing in the morning or right before going to bed is a great time to do a 5 or 10 minute mediation. I like to use the Oak app for guided mediations or to provide the zen sounds I need to focus. There is an option to pick the amount of time you need which is perfect when you only have a couple minutes available.
  3. Quick workouts – I used to be the person totally annoyed when I saw people working out on vacation, haha. But one thing I discovered during the COVID-19 pandemic is that if you dedicate just 5 to 15 minutes each day to working out, it makes it way less overwhelming. I utilize the Peloton app when working out at home and when traveling. A lot of people don’t realize you don’t even need the bike or treadmill to get the most out of the app. I was drawn to the Peloton app because of the variety of class types such as yoga, cardio, bodyweight strength plus the flexible class lengths available (5, 10, or 15 minutes). I might not have time for a 45 minute yoga session, but I can crush a 10 minute HIIT cardio or 5 minute ab workout any day.
  4. Being out in nature – There are definite health benefits to being out in nature. When on vacation, no matter where you may be, take time to be away from a screen, device, or technology. Nature walks, sitting silently on a beach, or even enjoying lunch in a park can all help with reducing stress, anxiety, and getting the natural vitamin D your body needs. Next time you’re on vacation, try going for a scenic walk or having your morning coffee or tea outside on a terrace and you’ll feel the benefits of taking in nature.
  5. Journaling – I like to bring my journal with me when I travel. When I take those moments to meditate or enjoy time in nature, I think it’s important to reflect and have gratitude for the place I’m in. Keeping a separate travel journal is great to joint down fun experiences and document vacation moments outside of just taking photos. There is something therapeutic for me to put pen to paper to express how I’m feeling in the moment.

No matter what your next vacation adventure, remember that you don’t have to sacrifice your wellness journey when away. Staying true to your wellness routine is a part of the journey – safe travels!
